Description

Summary

Assist teacher in preparation and management of classroom activities and administrative requirements. Work under supervision of certified teacher.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Assist teacher in preparing instructional and other materials and classroom displays
  • Assist with administration, scoring and recording of data of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
  • Help maintain neat and orderly classroom (may include a kitchen and bathroom).
  • Adhere to universal precautions.
  • Adhere and support campus and classroom discipline as prescribed by the classroom teacher and principal.
  • Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher; work with individual student or small groups.
  • Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, playground duty, bathroom or diapering duty or any other duty assigned by the principal or Director of Special Education.
  • Keep teacher informed immediately of special needs or problems of individual students to include parental or general education concerns.
  • Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
  • Participate in faculty meeting and special events as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor/Director/Coordinator or Superintendent.

Qualifications:

Certified as outlined in No Child Left Behind

Education and/or Experience:

High School Diploma or GED and “Highly Qualified” training certification; or at least 48 hours of college or and associate’s degree

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to work well with students and adults and to communicate effectively. Ability to maintain confidentiality in all situations in or out of the school environment. Ability to follow directions, schedules, and Special Education programs as directed by the classroom teacher or principal. Ability to understand the implications of a disability and to translate that understanding into good teaching practices as modeled by the classroom teacher.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling,and twisting.  The employee is occasionally required to walk.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. The employee must be able to assist in a two man lift up to 200 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
